Verify the mechanical interface

Measure the Smith bar outside diameter where the plate clamps, not the rotating sleeve used for weight plates.

Confirm the clamping width, fastener engagement and any liner required to prevent slip or bar damage.

Use only the attachment and load limits approved for that machine-and-plate combination.

Set the movement and safeties

Rotate the unloaded bar through every hook position and verify the plate never prevents a controlled re-rack.

Set physical safety stops before entering the movement zone, then test the full path with no plates.

Check footplate angle, shoe grip, bench stability and whether the user can exit without moving under an unsupported bar.

Decide whether the conversion works

Count installation, removal and storage time if the rack changes frequently between Smith presses and other exercises.

A dedicated leg press may be preferable when many users need quick adjustment, very heavy loading or a fixed back support.

Send the supplier the machine model, bar diameter, hook direction, available stop positions, user heights and intended loads.
